Ferries and lake boats in Italy: times, fares and piers

One page per crossing, written for visitors: which pier or quay the boat leaves from, the sailings in the current period and what a ticket costs. Every table shows the day we last compared it with the operator's own timetable.

Taking a boat in Italy can mean three quite different things. On the northern lakes, the public navigation service runs slow boats, hydrofoils and a few car ferries, and its timetables change between weekdays, Sundays and seasons. Across the Strait of Messina, ships sail around the clock, and on the Amalfi Coast fast ferries link Salerno with Positano. To the smaller islands you usually travel by hydrofoil or ferry from a mainland port.

It helps to know which kind of vessel is waiting at the pier. A car ferry takes cars, motorbikes and bicycles on a separate fare scale, often priced by vehicle length; lake boats and hydrofoils carry foot passengers only. Each page names the vessel type, the pier to head for and what you can bring on board, so you do not end up queuing at the wrong landing stage.

Some island councils add a landing charge to the fare, and several lake services shrink or stop in winter. If an operator has not yet released next season's sailings, you will read that on the page instead of an estimate.

Whether you can take a car, need to book a seat or can simply turn up at the pier depends on the vessel. The same crossings are grouped here by what sails on them.

Questions about ferries and lake boats in Italy

Can I take a hire car on an Italian lake boat?

Only on the crossings served by a car ferry. On the lakes most boats are for foot passengers, and the car ferries charge by vehicle length on a separate fare sheet. The vessel type is shown at the top of every page.

Where do I buy a ticket?

At the ticket office on the pier or in the port, on the operator's website and, on some routes, on board. Rules differ between companies, including for return tickets, and each crossing page explains how it works there.

Is there anything to pay on top of the fare?

On some islands, yes. Councils such as Favignana and Carloforte levy a landing charge with their own rates and exemptions. The crossing pages concerned give the rule in force on the date they were checked.

Where do the times and prices come from?

From the operator or the public body that runs the line: its website, timetable PDF, fare sheet or service notices. We keep a dated copy, and that date appears beside every table. If two official sources disagree, the figure is left out and the page says why.

What happens in bad weather?

Strong wind, a rough sea or fog can cancel or change a sailing, and operators post this in their service notices. On the day you travel, the operator's information takes priority over the tables on this site.

Is there an Italian version?

Yes. Every crossing also has an Italian page, written separately for local readers, with the same data and the same check date.
