Two very different crossings: the round-the-clock strait between Calabria and Sicily, and the hydrofoils from Trapani to the Egadi Islands.
Across the Strait of Messina, Caronte & Tourist ferries link Villa San Giovanni in Calabria with Messina 24 hours a day, seven days a week, carrying cars and foot passengers on separate fares. The crossing sits in this section because it lands in Sicily, even though one shore is in Calabria.
On the island's west coast, Liberty Lines hydrofoils leave the Via Ammiraglio Staiti terminal in Trapani for Favignana in the Egadi Islands, some calling at Levanzo on the way. Favignana council levies a landing charge on visitors arriving from the mainland, with the exemptions set out in its regulation.
