Laveno-Mombello, in the province of Varese, and Intra, a district of Verbania in Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, face each other across the central part of Lake Maggiore. Navigazione Lago Maggiore's ferry between them takes foot passengers, bicycles, motorbikes and cars, and the timetable shows every crossing arriving 20 minutes after departure.
Since 21 October the ferry has followed a temporary table. To run an extra night service between Cannero and Cannobio during roadworks on the SS34, the operator removed fifteen crossings and added two. Boats now leave Intra from 05:00 to 00:00 and Laveno from 05:30 to 00:30, giving 33 crossings in each direction from Monday to Friday and 31 at weekends.
This table is valid until 8 November 2026 at the latest, the last day of the autumn timetable it is based on, and the operator has not published the one that follows. A foot passenger pays €4.00; a small car (3.5 m or shorter) costs €9.10 including the driver.

€4.00 on foot, €9.10 with a small car
The Intra – Laveno line has its own fares, printed on the vehicle price sheet and separate from the stage-based fares of the lake steamers. On foot an adult pays €4.00 single or €8.00 return, and a child €2.00 or €4.00. A book of ten crossings costs €36.00 for adults and €18.00 for children. The operator's general conditions count children as aged 4 to 11, and children younger than four pay nothing when they don't need a seat.
Vehicle prices include the driver only. Cars measuring 3.5 m or less pay €9.10 single and €18.20 return; from 3.5 to 4.5 m it is €11.40, and anything longer €14.80. A bicycle with its rider costs €5.80 and a camper van €19.00. The sheet also lists a €5.80 vehicle booking fee.

Finding the ferry landing in Laveno and Intra
The timetable only names the stops as Laveno and Verbania-Intra and gives no street address. Our map pins are taken from OpenStreetMap and mark the ferry berths; in Intra that is not the same place as the passenger pier for the lake steamers.
Laveno – ferry landing
The operator's timetable names the stop simply as Laveno. OpenStreetMap places the ferry landing in Piazza Europa and tags it as a Navigazione Laghi terminal that vehicles can use.
Verbania Intra – ferry landing
Intra has a separate passenger pier for the lake steamers, marked as closed to vehicles on the map, next to the ferry berth shown here. If you are driving, follow the signs for the car ferry (traghetto) rather than the boat pier.
Straight over from Lombardy to Piedmont
Laveno is on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore and Intra on the western one. The ferry makes no intermediate stops, and the timetable lists only the two ports, so twenty minutes after casting off you land in another region and another province.
Useful to know before crossing
- Hire cars are fine
This is a car ferry, so a hire car can cross; you pay by vehicle length and the fare covers the driver only. On Lake Maggiore the operator carries vehicles only between its car ferry landings.
- Timetable ends 8 November
The current table has no end date of its own, but it is built on the autumn timetable that expires on 8 November 2026. The operator has not published times from 9 November, so check its notices or call freephone 800 551801 before travelling after that date.
- Gaps in the afternoon
Since 21 October fifteen crossings have been dropped, mostly between midday and early evening, as a result of a night shuttle between Cannero and Cannobio during roadworks on the SS34. The operator said on 28 October that it is looking at improvements, so times may change again.
- Midnight crossings
The 00:00 from Intra and the 00:30 from Laveno are the last of the night and reach the other side at 00:20 and 00:50.
- Paying by card
Adults on foot paying the full fare can use NaviTap, tapping a contactless card or phone on the reader on board. It does not cover children, luggage, bikes or vehicles.
- Bags and dogs
One bag per person travels free if no side is longer than 60 cm and it holds no more than 40 litres. Dogs need a lead of 1.5 m at most, and the owner must carry a muzzle.
Why the timetable changed this autumn
The shuttle behind the changes runs between Cannero Riviera and Cannobio, further north on the Piedmont shore, with departures in the evening and at night between 21:05 and 00:30. It was requested by a technical committee at the prefecture while the SS34 lakeside road is made safe. For anyone crossing between Laveno and Intra, its main effect is the sailings it has taken away.
The same timetables page lists the Arona – Cannobio steamers separately. For questions about sailings, the fare sheet gives the freephone number 800 551801 and the Arona operations office on +39 0322 233 200.
