Ferry ramp or passenger pier: which one to use

Each village has a vehicle ramp for the ferry and a separate pier for the ordinary boats. The difference matters whenever a notice stops vehicles: at Menaggio from 2 to 6 November 2026, and at Varenna on the sailings listed in the 23 October notice, foot passengers are sent to the passenger pier.

Varenna – car ferry ramp

Via Imbarcadero, Olivedo · Varenna, province of Lecco

Ferries to Menaggio share the Via Imbarcadero ramp in Olivedo with the Bellagio and Cadenabbia crossings. Repairs announced on 23 October 2026 are still under way there: on some sailings no vehicles board or land, and walk-on passengers use the passenger pier beside the ramp.

Menaggio – car ferry pier

Scalo di Menaggio · Menaggio, province of Como

Menaggio's vehicle landing, shown as "Menaggio (Traghetto)" by the operator, is separate from the passenger boat pier on Via Quattro Novembre. From Monday 2 to Friday 6 November 2026 work on the ferry pier stops all vehicle traffic; people board and land at the passenger pier instead. Positions come from OpenStreetMap.

East shore to west shore without touching Bellagio

Unlike the Bellagio sailings, this ferry goes straight across the lake: Varenna is on the eastern side in the province of Lecco, Menaggio on the western side in the province of Como. On weekdays the crossing takes 15 minutes, but the leaflet prints 30 for Sunday and holiday departures from Varenna.

Before you cross between Varenna and Menaggio

Getting on from Menaggio and Varenna

Menaggio is the bus hub of the western shore. ASF line C110 follows the lake from Como to the railway station at Colico, and C112 climbs to Porlezza and continues to Lugano. Across the water, Varenna has its railway station. Passenger boats and fast craft of the Como–Colico route stop at both villages in winter as well; their times are in the first two tables of the same leaflet.

If you are in Varenna after the last Menaggio boat, the Varenna–Bellagio ferry keeps going until 21:20 on weekdays, and from Bellagio the crossing to Cadenabbia, on Menaggio's side of the lake, has weekday departures until 21:40. Two weekday Varenna–Bellagio sailings, at 07:35 and 06:05, also call at Menaggio but carry foot passengers only.

Are pier works stopping cars at either end?

According to the operator's notices, vehicle traffic at Menaggio is suspended from 2 to 6 November 2026, and the 23 October notice bars cars from some Varenna sailings; for winter departures, check on freephone 800 551801. Foot passengers still travel, boarding at the passenger pier.

Yes: ASF line C112 runs Menaggio – Porlezza – Lugano. Check its timetable on the bus company's site.
